Sunday Beer Reads

After enjoying a spectacular Friday and Saturday, this dreary and cold Sunday is a perfect time to stay inside and read (or in my case write) about beer.

Mugs for Bring Your Own Mug Night
Mugs for Bring Your Own Mug Night at Black Flag Brewing

The Pint Night crew’s Wednesday was a twofer in Columbia, MD; we visited both Frisco Tap House featuring Bourbon County Stout plus a stop at Black Flag Brewing for their bring your own mug night. The Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout (2016) tasted of chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, caramel, and licorice. At 14+%, I shared samples with several friends. Two years ago, we had a fresher version of this amazing beer. It has aged well but just might be starting to show a bit of age. We drove around the corner to Black Flag where they filled our various mugs for Bring Your Own Mug night. I enjoyed a stein of Friends with Benefits, a delicious mango IPA.

My daughter spent yesterday afternoon at the Cherry Blossom Wine and Beer Festival in Washington, DC. For a $25 Groupon, she spent 3 hours tasting samples of craft beer, wine, and cider. Beer vendors included Founders, Troegs, Dominion, Black Flag, Guinness, and Blue Moon. The gorgeous weather made up for the parking lot motif. She and her friends had a terrific time.

Baltimore Beer Articles

One of my favorite Baltimore breweries, The Brewer’s Art, has teamed up with The Baltimore Rock Opera Society to make Chuggernaut, a Kölsch-style ale. Peabody Heights has come up with another Mr. Trash Wheel beer, the sequel to Lost Python Ale. Read about my favorite named beer in Baltimore, Professor Trash Wheel Blind Me Wit Science, complete with its own theme song. Watch Wes Case and other Baltimore Sun reporters sample National Bohemians new Crab Shack Shanty. Finally, watch Chris Sands of Uncapped interview the godfather of Maryland craft beer, Hugh Sissons of Heavy Seas.

This Mother Jones article, Did Drinking Give Me Breast Cancer, discusses the possible link between alcohol and cancer. I found the tobacco-style “alcohol studies” a bit disturbing.

Watch this youtube video about this 18th Century Brewery and you just might head up to New York State for a tour.
