Sunflower microgreen salad

Lagom, a Havre de Grace Gem

Havre de Grace, MD Thursday, May 23, 2018

I headed north on I-95 from Columbia, MD to my hometown of Havre de Grace. That’s usually about an hour drive, but it was a closer to 2 hours, due to traffic. My destination was Lagom, a new restaurant in town.

Lagom

Lagom just might be my favorite restaurant in Havre de Grace.

I learned Lagom means “just enough” in Swedish. I was disappointed when I discovered that Laurrapin Grill had closed, but Lagom is actually an improvement, IMHO.

I started out with a Captain Lawrence unfiltered IPA (delicious).  This New York brewer from Elmsford makes some pretty good beers. New Juice on the Block is a NE IPA, cloudy, creamy and juicy with New Zealand Waimea hops.

I was not too hungry, so I ordered a small plate of Brie with fruit and Sunflower, a micro green sunflower salad (probably the hit of the evening). Microgreens are the first tiny sprouts from seeds.  Sprouted microgreens are more flavorful and nutritious than larger, older leaves. The sunflower microgreens are quite unusual; almost meaty, almost nutty.   I also mooched a slice of the Margherita pizza with arugula – wow!

I will definitely come back to this HdG gem!

Saison beer

Before my journey to Havre de Grace, I bottled my latest beer, a Saison. It is about 6.5% ABV and tastes pretty good. I’m excited about this beer, mostly because the past few homebrews I’ve attempted have been a disappointment. If all goes well, this light, toasty Saison will be my summer beer. I’ll let you know in about 10 days when it carbonates.

Soul Magnets

My neighbor and friend, Brent, along with the rest of the Soul Magnets, will be performing at Peabody Heights Brewery this Friday, May 25 from 6-9 pm. This band has a lot of energy and talent. We’ve spent quite a few evenings enjoying their R&B music at Sonoma’s in Columbia. I recommend supporting them and Peabody Heights, a terrific brewery that has helped several Maryland breweries get their start through contract brewing.

Cheers!

Warren
