Leelynn's outdoor patio

2 Local Hangouts

Recently, I enjoyed meeting friends at two local establishments – Leelynn’s and Sonoma’s. It’s nice to have nearby gathering places in Columbia, MD.

I met some new friends at Leelynn’s Dining Room and Lounge. It was actually a meeting about bike safety in Howard County. I was hoping to sit outside on this warm April evening, but too many people had the same idea. Instead, we sat at a table near the bar. It was a bit noisy but it gave us a feel for this bustling neighborhood hangout. My friends knew several people at nearby tables. It just felt comfortable.

We were there early enough for happy hour – half price drinks during the week from 3:00 – 6:30 PM. We shared 2 really tasty appetizers: Ahi Tuna and Hummus. In honor of the unseasonable warm weather, I had a couple summer ales: the citrusy Big Easy IPA  and 60 Minute IPA (an old favorite). They had an interesting beer selection, plenty of macro-brews, but a nice mix of craft beers.

Leelynn’s is located in Ellicott City, MD near MD 108 and US 29. It is right behind Allview Liquors. While you can see it from 108, it’s a bit hard to get to. It is at the end of Old Annapolis Road off Columbia Road. The nearby MD 108 provides easy access and noise. The noise detracts from my favorite place at Leelynn’s – their patio. Right now it is even a bit noisier as they make improvements to this fantastic outdoor space.

It was a Friday night, a friend was having a birthday and another friend was playing percussion for the Soul Magnets at Sonoma’s. It was a no-brainer. So, we headed to Sonoma’s Sports Bar and Grill for a great night of music, some food and drink and a little dancing.

Sonoma’s is a fun, neighborhood bar located in the Owen Brown Village Center of Columbia. Besides offering frequent live music, their many TVs make this a great place to watch sports. One time I joined a standing room only crowd to watch a Ravens playoff game a few years back. It was an electric, exciting time! Occasionally, I will stop here while biking to enjoy the outdoor seating which is located right along the bike path. Last fall, Sonoma’s was part of the first Columbia Pub Crawl.

Cheers!

  1. Thanks for mention, Warren! Your group was the most fun of everyone there! On behalf of The Soul Magnets, we’re glad to have been part of a memorable night. We’re back there June 30, so hope to see you again.

By the way, I had the Goose Island IPA, a solid contributor to any tap lineup.

    1. Brent, you are welcome. We had a great time and love the Soul Magnets. I’ll put June 30th down on the calendar, but we may be out of town.

I sampled someone’s Goose Island IPA – very nice IPA. I went local with Jailbreak’s Infinite. It is a very drinkable red ale. .
