Ellicott Mills is Back

Ellicott City

Historic Ellicott City is bustling again. We met friends for dinner at the Ellicott Mills Brewing Company last Saturday night. The sidewalks were busy with people. Our usual parking places were all full, so we drove up to the courthouse parking lot. It is quite a winding drive up the hill, but an impressive walking path now connects the lot to downtown EC. Read about this award-winning staircase.

Effects from last July’s 1000-year flood can still be seen everywhere. Cacao Lane is closed for good and the Bean Hollow is still temporarily closed, but many places are open and going strong. Manor Hill Tavern, now operates in the old the Diamondback Tavern location. Even the Phoenix Emporium, located at the lower end of Main Street, has reopened, despite taking the full brunt of the 2016 flood. The Ellicott Mills Brewing Company has been serving German-style food and beer again since November.

We took the path directly to the  Ellicott Mills Brewing Company. The German-style brewpub closed after the June 30th flood, but reopened in November 2016. Their brewing operation has also started up again, now serving a full lineup of  their beers.

I ordered a plate of sausage from our Liverpool-accented waiter. He was charming and efficient. Nearly all of us ordered their Pumpkin Ale. A shout out goes to D Bear for recommending on untappd this very fine pumpkin/yam beer. Also, I tried their Marzen. It was sweet, flavorful and true to the style. The German Märzen or Oktoberfest style of beer is mildly hopped, dark copper in color with an alcohol content between 5-6%.
