Pint Night crew at Frisco

Starr Hill at Friscos

We had another great pint night at Frisco Tap House! We sampled some ales from Starr Hill Brewery of Crozet, VA which is just outside of Charlottesville.

Starr Hill is located on 5391Three Notch’D Rd. What a great street name for a Virginia brewery. I swear I can taste the country when I sampled their The Hook. It is a refreshing, sessionable beer with a nice grapefruit taste from start to finish. Plus, when I tried a Starr Hill beer on pint night, I got a free pint class!

Besides the glass, I also received a hop rhizome from my friend, Jim. This variety is Nugget. For the past 2 years, I have attempted to plant hops, with absolutely no success. Third times the charm? I’ll keep you posted.

I was in the mood for a saison, so our server, Abby, suggested French Oak Saison by New Belgium; A delicate sour. White wine-like. Very drinkable. Thanks, Abby, for that great suggestion!

Besides the 50-plus beers on tap, the beer knowledge at Frisco is amazing. The general manager and all around beer connoisseur, Keith, always comes by to share a little beer wisdom with us. He and I both enjoyed Starr Hill’s The Hook. Also, he mentioned they have some nice Unibroue giveaways for the upcoming July pint night.

I had a yen for a sour. Keith is not a big fan of sours, so I asked Abby for another suggestion. She gave me a challenge, bringing out 3 samples: Uinta Brewing Read Set Gose, Buxton/To Sky Mountain Sour, and Jolly Pumpkin Madrugada Obscura.

All were exceptional, but I couldn’t resist the wonderfully tart Sky Mountain Sour by Buxton; This collaborative beer comes all the way from Denmark! If you enjoy a sour, this is a good one!

Cheers!

  1. Better than expected with Starr Hill, and lots of sours and other interesting brews on tap. Getting there early was rewarded with a Spiegelau IPA glass, covfefe.

Ran out of time but need to try Draai Laag R2 Koelschipone from an interesting brewer named Dennis in Pittsburgh!

    1. Loved the Starr Hill The Hook. That was my first experience with Starr Hill, hopefully not my last. I’m sure they’ll get plenty of beer covfefe.
I’ll look for Draai Laag R2 Koelschipone next time.
