MD Brewery Challenge #20

The weatherman predicted rain, so why not do a brewery tour? We chose Diamondback as our destination, but the previous night’s rain had flooded it out. Undaunted, we detoured to newly opened Monument City Brewing

After driving past Diamondback several times only to find it closed,  Garmin easily directed us to Monument City. And they have lots of parking. Corn hole and a tent outside welcomed us to this brand new brewery. We hurried inside for some flights of beer just ahead of the rain.

Some Monument City regulars told us about massive weekend hordes with lines wandering out the door. Not today. The threat of rain limited the beer crowd at the taproom, which was perfect. There was a nice buzz of energy but it was not too loud to have a conversation. And we had many friendly conversations. I’m always amazed at the friendliness of craft beer drinkers. An Essex couple and MC regulars hung with us for a while, took a picture of the Columbia Pint Night crew and even bought us a round. Cheers!

Monument City’s paddles are the kind with holes so that the tasting glass is lifted only after raising the paddle about an inch. For some reason, I always have difficulty navigating this style and managed to spill a bit on the bar, floor, me and a near by patron. We all got a good laugh about it.

Among all our flights, I tasted these beers:

  • American Brown Ale – Caramel notes. The gang’s favorite.
  • 51 Rye – a nice spicy, citrusy rye
  • Battle IPA – a piny IPA
  • Among the Pines – an extra piny double IPA
  • Crooked Window – a sweet Belgian Dubbel

Some of us scarfed down some food from The Local Fry, conveniently located inside the taproom. I was lucky enough to get a nibble. Delicious!

I would definitely come back to this fun place. Monument City as #20 in the Maryland Brewery Challenge, was a real hit. For those who love maps, here’s an updated map of the challenge.

Cheers!
