Draft KBS

KBS on Tap

When I learned that Frisco Tap House of Columbia, MD had KBS on tap, I had to give it a try. Dbear and I were up for another beer adventure.

For my dedicated followers, you will know I was lucky enough to find a 4-pack of Founders KBS. This bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout with coffee and vanilla is currently ranked #2 by Beer Advocate. Having tried the bottle version, this intrepid adventurer was willing to compare it to the draft.  I must say, as good as the bottled KBS tastes, the draft version is even better. Dbear and I agree it is a world-class beer!

We sat in the quieter back room near the fish tank.  Next to us sat a New Jersey couple who were staying in Columbia for the weekend to march in the science parade in Washington, D.C. One is a middle school science teacher and the other, a biologist. Dbear helped them plan a route to DC after learning the green line was closed. I, on the other hand, suggested a beer, Bell’s Amber, when none of the brown’s on tap sounded good to her. By the way, she found it delicious.

Dbear and I had a yen for a citrusy IPA and turned to our server, Alycia for advice. We had listened to her discuss craft beer all night with the nearby tables and thought we’d tap into her impressive knowledge. She suggested we try the Otter Creek Citra Mantra. This is a lager with a twist, it’s an Indian Pale Lager (IPL).  This IPL has a nice citrus taste with a clean, fruity hop flavor. Yummy! We later learned craft beer superstar, Alycia, has a unique edge – her boyfriend is a guest brewer for Brookeville Farm Brewery.

  1. KBS is indeed a wonderful beer, but personally I couldn’t really detect much of a difference between the bottle and draft version.

I’m left wondering how/if Founders maintains the consistency of KBS. Given that KBS is aged in many different barrels they surely can’t all taste the same.

    1. Thanks for your comments.

Of course, I am famous for not detecting beers in blind taste tests, but the draft version did seem mellower and overall better. I will gladly volunteer to retest the differences side-by-side. If only I had some more bottles. 🙂

Most of Founders beers are amazing, so their consistency with KBS is not too surprising. Of course, I don’t think my palate is good enough to judge beers I’ve had one year apart.
