Febrewary Homebrew Competition at Black Flag

Tonight at Black Flag Brewing Co., the winners will be announced for the FebrewaryFebrewary Homebrew Competition poster Homebrew Competition.

Fireside Chat Ale
Fireside Chat Ale – 4% chance of winning something

Three prizes will be given.  The first prize winner will be brewed on the Black Flag pilot system. Second place is a $150 gift certificate to Maryland Homebrew (MDHB). Third place is a $75 gift certificate to MDHB.  The Febrewary competition is sponsored by Black Flag and MDHB.

I submitted one of the 81 entries for this competition. If my math is right, I have a 3/81 chance of winning something. That is less than a 4% chance. If I include my other 3 friends who submitted entries, the odds get better – almost 15% chance of one of us winning something. Woohoo! Time to celebrate!

Eighty-one entries of 3 beers each, that’s around 10 gallons of beer. I’m curious to learn more about how the selection process works. Maybe next year I’ll volunteer to taste beer rather than make it.

Apparently, there has been quite a lot of pushback for the 6 PM announcement, so Black Flag moved the time to 8 PM. I plan to attend, as well as many of the Wednesday night gang. I expect a crowd. (definitely) I also expect trumpets, confetti and cheering crowds, just like at MDHB when we delivered our entries (never happened).

As a proud father of my beer (Fireside Chat Ale), I have documented his life from birth to bottle and now the competition. And like any gushing father, I may bore you to death. Just in case you missed some of little Chat’s life, here are all his articles ad nauseum:

Tomorrow, I’ll let you know how it turns out. I’m sure I’ll be celebrating this evening (in my dreams).

Cheers!

Warren

  1. Awesome time, good excuse to make some fun beers and brag about them. We can tell everyone we came in 4th. Looking forward to next year.

    1. Ditto. There is nothing wrong with 4th place. I don’t mind sharing that place with 77 other brewers.
